Eight-Time Oscar-Winner, ALAN MENKEN will be giving a rare concert at the DISNEYLAND HOTEL on August 12, 2012 He will be performing songs for many modern-day Disney film classics and more. Menken's concert is part of D23's Destination D. a two-day event celebrating 75 years of Disney Animated Features which will also feature a concert by DICK VAN DYKE and The Vantastix performing timeless Disney songs and pop standards. Other highlights of the event include exclusive previews of upcoming films from Walt Disney Animation Studios, salutes to the great Disney animators and artists of the past, hands-on activities, an extraordinary reunion of Disney animated voice talent, a glimpse at how the Disney animated features have influenced the Disney parks, rare and never-before-seen artwork and film footage. Alan Menken was supposed to give a casual single hour of tunes from the piano.
What he gave us was a spectacular almost two hour overview of his career, accompanied by Richard Kraft's slides of some of the rarest Menken memorabilia ever (probably from his own collection). The audience had lotsa celebs (from Marge Champion (93!) to Richard Sherman) and the whole night was just plain fun! How often does a composer of Menken's stature sit down with an audience to do an all encompassing retrospective? Damn seldom. He even did one non-Menken piece. As a tribute to his late (and best) partner Howard Ashman and in memory of the recent passing of Marvin Hamlisch he did a number from their musical together SMILE, based on the film of the same name. I had heard the song before at one of Bruce Kimmel's Kritzerland concerts, and as deeply moving as it was then, it was doubly so Sunday night. It was entitled simply and appropriately "Disneyland". But much of the night came from Menken's archives with items like rejected songs and their replacements, vividly illustrating how one of their classic songs came to be. Then there were songs from projects that never materialized, theme park music, single songs from films without Menken scores (like CAPTAIN AMERICA); all simply a treasure trove of unheard melodies that, combined with his big hits, made for a historic evening . And his in-between patter was funny and relaxed, suggesting his career could even take a turn like Mr. Hamlisch did, doing concerts and other gigs this way. This was a totally memorable event. And considering the whole weekend was packed with such events from composer-harpist Alex Rannie (I heard his score for TOL’ABLE DAVID (1921) played live last summer at the Academy) doing a well researched SNOW WHITE seminar showing how Disney composers Wallace, Smith, Harline, Churchill, etc. worked on and played on each others projects, to an equally all encompassing concert by Dick Van Dyke, this IS quite a statement.

Whew! Was anybody filming this, so far as you could tell? Your description reminds me of the series of "An Evening With . . . " songwriter lectures at New York's 92nd Street Y from years ago. A number of those were taped and are available on DVD. Yes, D23 was filming it but what they do with it, outside using clips to promote their club, I don't know.
