Khalil Gibran werd geboren in Libanon en bracht het grootste deel van zijn leven door in de Verenigde Staten van Amerika, hij stierf op 48 jarige leeftijd in New York. Hij was schrijver, beeldend kunstenaar en dichter. Enkele van zijn werken zijn De Profeet (1923) en Jezus, de Zoon van de Men (1928). In beide werken combineerde hij Westerse en Oosterse mystieken. De Profeet werd niet overal in eerste instantie positief ontvangen maar verkocht goed en met name in 1930 en 1960 steeg de populariteit van het werk. In de Arabische wereld wordt Gibran beschouwd als een politiek en literair rebel, met zijn romantische stijl nam hij afstand van de traditionele schrijfstijlen. Zijn werken worden door velen tot op de dag van vandaag gelezen.

Voskamp, Nico - Gibran, Kahlil, Fisscher, Tiny - Universeel verhaal nu ook voor kinderen [Recensie] Een nieuw boek kun je dit niet noemen: in 1923 verscheen The Prophet en werd direct een wereldwijde bestseller. Miljoenen volwassenen namen sindsdien de wijsheden van Khalil Gibran tot zich en deden er hopelijk goede dingen mee. En nu is er dus dankzij uitgeverij Samsara ook een jongerenversie. Dat is geen dag te laat. Natuurlijk zijn de levenslessen in het boek universeel, maar zijn ze nog altijd gericht op volwassenen. Terwijl kinderen uiteraard ook antwoorden zoeken op vragen waarvoor ze zich op hun niveau interesseren – ik durf zelfs te beweren voor dieper gaande vragen dan volwassenen bedenken. Tiny Fisscher, die de tekst bewerkte, voelt dat feilloos aan.
